How I gave myself Diabetes II
The best way to beat Diabetes is never to develop it in the first place. If you do develop it , have a look at my book
“ The Eat All Day Diet “. It deals with Diabetes II head on. I lost 90 lbs and have gotten off of most of my meds. I feel the best in my life …… well, almost as good as 20 ! And I ain’t no spring chicken !!
Diabetes alone doesn’t cause health complications –
It’s uncontrolled diabetes that
causes health problems, says Lucille Hughes, a certified diabetes educator and director of diabetes education at South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside, New York.
Uncontrolled diabetes will kill you . Get smart now !
Being sedentary, and spending a lot of time sitting with computers is the most common stairway to it. Unconscious eating while on the computer puts you on the elevator to Diabetes.
Many years ago, when I was young, I listened to music, read books , practiced my saxophone and talked on the phone. Hah, not really that different than hanging out with computers e-mailing and sending texts on the phone. Ah , comfy sedentary lifestyles !
Always having a car enabled me to work. I drove everywhere. I always worked long hours managing restaurants. Then at 23 , I opened my 1st business. I haven’t worked again as an employee since. I have always managed to be 20 -30 lbs over weight since high school . Too much beer tasting ?
Yet, I thought I was eating a healthy diet as a young man.
I was eating whole wheat, whole grain and good crusty bread. I never ate white bread because I knew that was unhealthy. I ate brown rice , wild rice and never white rice.
I avoided french fries and always opted for baked or real mashed potatoes. I always drank beer because I thought it was easier on your system than hard liquor. I got smart and switched to light beer for less calories.
I loved pasta but would eat the healthier “ green “ pasta. I drank Diet Coke to avoid the calories in regular soft drinks. I would still have occasional chocolate and chocolate cupcakes, but wasn’t really into candy or sweets. I was proud because I knew well enough to stay away from donuts, cakes and pies and pastries . I would eat side salads and veggies but not often enough. I loved corn, burgers , chili and loved “Chinese” food.
At 30 , I moved to Key West, opened another business and enjoyed the fact that there was a party every night just waiting for me.
I put more weight on but also became more active walking , cycling , boating, swimming and snorkeling. Sleep became irregular as I was now playing saxophone many nights and running my business 7 days a week.
I was not behaving well and unknowingly was setting a dangerous course.
I was drinking too much expresso, alcohol and was most likely dehydrated most of the time. Cuban rice and beans, plantains and too much Cuban white bread became the norm. Drinking too much beer became the norm.
What on earth was I doing all this years ?
I was eating like a student, as cheaply as I could , and washed it down with beer while chasing or thinking about chasing girls! It seemed like pretty normal behavior and a pretty normal typical diet for young guys. Hmmm , think about it : potatoes, rice, bread, pasta, beer and cupcakes sounds like a whole lotta carbs to me ! But I was saving money and just not realizing what I was doing to my health. It’s what we all ate and guess what ? Young people are still doing the same thing. I see less fascination with alcohol now because they’ve had a good look at what most of us look like at 35 !
Most every type II Diabetic will go through a form of Pre diabetes, or Metabolic Syndrome. Is it your only chance to get off the Diabetes bus (or elevator )? All you have to do is lose weight , eat healthy food and move ! A couple of months and you are back to fighting weight and smooth sailing.
When I was diagnosed with Pre diabetes 20 years ago , I didn’t want to believe it. I just came in for a check up.I didn’t want to hear this. I didn’t think it ran in my family and I wasn’t ready to stop having fun ! I ignored it believing it just wasn’t going to happen. I just didn’t want the fun to stop. Hah , only old people talked about health , diets , food and…… exercise … Forget about it ! Exercise is boring and grueling and I couldn’t see myself doing it !
Five years later I went to a different doctor because of numb and tingling toes . The doctor said I had full blown adult onset Diabetes II. My blood sugar reading was 275 . My Diabetes was out of control !

The sooner you realize how serious this is , the better. Don’t screw around. This is one thing in life , that if you nip it in the bud, you can live a great, new normal life.
Stay active every single day . An hour a day of exercise, walking or doing sports is the minimum time needed to keep Diabetes from knocking on your door . Two hours a day is my recommendation, to really stay healthy.
I could tell you a lot of stories about friends that are losing their sight and those that are now blind. With a few other friends , it’s more than sad. Every time I see them, they are missing more toes, fingers or limbs. It chokes me up because some are now in comas in nursing homes . Melvin last said to me “I’m alright Marty, doctor just said take this pill and I’ll be fine. He was in a coma for years …. I can no longer find it in me to see if he is still alive. Many have passed from heart attacks. Most people aren’t aware that the Diabetes brought it on like it did with me. Diabetes can also cause problems that diabetics just won’t want to talk about.
Dr. Mark Hyman , one of my favorite doctors calls Alzheimers and Dimentia a form of Diabetes. Diabetes 3 or Diabecity . Many doctors are now ascribing to this theory. Researchers are claiming a 100 million people will be suffering from Alzheimers or Dimentia by 2050. That’s a lot of lost key rings !
I wrote a book for the diabetic in mind ( me ! ) . It will open your eyes to a fun way of eating and beating it. Yes , you can have some chocolate and some drinks on this diet. I lost 90 lbs and have kept it off for years too . Sign up for my free blog and newsletter
